NIGERIAN FASHION WEEK IS WORKING WITH THE EUROPEAN UNION TO BECOME MORE GREEN
By: Hillary LeBlanc
Fashion Weeks have been increasingly sustainable over the years. Looking to Paris, London and New York, these fashion weeks have added sustainable measures to guest experiences, and more sustainable brands to their calendars. Copenhagen Fashion Week requires brands to follow sustainability guidelines to be in the show as does Berlin Fashion Week. It was recently announced that Nigerian Fashion Week would be working with the European Union to welcome more sustainable and green initiatives.
This year, a division of the European Union has partnered with Nigeria Fashion Week to promote sustainability. Nigeria Fashion Week is Presenting Going Green Collection 5, an eco-friendly runway featuring brands championing ethical practices. The title, Going Green Collection 5, represents the fifth time that Nigerian Fashion Week has a eco-friendly focused show collection. This collection will reinforce Nigeria Fashion Week’s ongoing commitment to shaping a responsible and future-focused fashion industry.
For Nigeria Fashion Week, going green represents a conscious commitment to using the earth’s resources responsibly while emphasizing waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and the minimization of environmental pollution. This translates to the use of eco-friendly materials and socially responsible production methods that empower communities and drive positive social change. The first Going Green Collection was in 2009 at Nigeria Fashion Week which was in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Environment.
The European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS has partnered with Nigeria Fashion Week 2026 to promote sustainable fashion, circular production and green enterprise in Nigeria’s creative industry. This year’s fashion week, which will be themed “Beyond the Runway: Fashion and Culture at the Heart of the Green & Blue Economy.” The ‘Blue Economy’ signals creativity and coastal living in Nigeria.
The collection of designers showing in the Going Green Collection 5 will be encouraged to demonstrate how materials that could otherwise end up as waste can be transformed through creativity and innovation into products with commercial value, giving them new life and recycling their purpose.
The collaboration between the European Union and Nigeria is part of a bigger conversation around the circular economy, and increasing business opportunities between these regions. A greater adoption of recycling, upcycling and responsible production of fashion in Nigeria could reduce the environmental impact of the fashion industry while opening opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship and job creation, particularly for young people and both parties hope that Nigeria Fashion Week can be a catalyst for this mindset.
This partnership will also support the Trees for Nigeria Campaign, which is an environmental initiative of Nigeria Fashion Week. Designers, models, participants, government representatives, development partners, celebrities and international delegates are expected to participate in tree-planting and environmental awareness activities as part of fashion week programming. Outside of the fashion shows, there will also be three-day events around sustainability that include platformed discussions on circular economy, sustainable fashion, green innovation, youth entrepreneurship and responsible production. Professionals at the event are expected to examine ways of incorporating sustainability into fashion production and help strengthen the industry’s goals and growth.
The Nigerian Fashion Week programming will also feature exhibitions, business engagements, the Nigeria Fashion Entrepreneurs Forum, sustainability activities and the Nigeria Fashion Awards. The Nigerian Fashion Entrepreneur Forum is a complimentary capacity-building and business development programme strategically designed to transition the young creative talent attending the fashion week into sustainable, commercially viable enterprises. The forum will host dialogue between emerging designers, manufacturers, financial experts, and policymakers. Key agenda items at the forum include navigating funding, building robust corporate foundations, elevating manufacturing standards to meet international benchmarks, sourcing requirements, and trade procedures which will highlight structured pathways aiming to connect qualifying Nigerian fashion businesses with global retail opportunities and international buyers.
Nigerian Fashion Week is being held in Abuja, Nigeria from October 2nd to 4th, 2026.
