WHY ARE YOUR HANDBAGS GETTING THEIR OWN VIP SEAT AT RESTAURANTS?

By: Prachi Khatri

Luxury handbags have evolved from simple accessories to symbol of prestige. Gone are those days of awkwardly placing your priced possession on the floor or draping it uncomfortably over back of your chair. Restaurants are embracing the concept of pampering for not only their patrons but also the precious handbags.

But why the sudden focus on handbags being given VIP treatment? The global luxury handbag market is valued at approximately $70 billion USD and is only projected to rise in the future. From the bustling streets of New York City to the fashion capitals of Paris and Milan, handbags have become synonymous with style and sophistication, driving sales and influencing trends across the globe. To put things in perspective, a single Hermès Birkin bag may sell for tens of thousands of dollars at an auction with a several year-long waiting list. Luxury handbags are in high demand, which highlights their importance in the fashion industry.

When patrons are dining out there are usually limited options of where to put their handbag; the least desirable option is the floor and most common would be on the back of a chair, which can be uncomfortable or vulnerable to theft or damage.

Cultural beliefs and superstitions around having to place a handbag or purse on the floor has brought awareness to restaurateurs. Some cultures believe it causes bad luck in your financial life, like the saying “a purse on the floor is money out the door." In many cultures handbags are more than just accessories; they are symbols of status, identity and the physical protector of your finances. It is believed that they ought to be respected.

The solution has been to offer a compact stool or discreet hook under the table to elevate, display and respect the placement of a patron’s handbag. By incorporating these changes, restaurants are honoring inclusion of cultural beliefs and traditions.

The trend of handbag seating also reflects a broader shift in fashion, that they are also meant to be showcased as pride pieces. Through thoughtful hospitality practices, we can see an evolution of fashion and society. The Japanese concept of "omotenashi," emphasizes the attention to detail in hospitality with a leading principle that every encounter is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, which should be treated with the utmost care and respect.

Having a special area for purses shows a great deal of respect for visitors and their belongings, especially in Japan where manners and etiquette are highly valued in social interactions. Restaurants adding little chairs or stools for high-end handbags, makes customers feel appreciated and respected.

Some real-world examples of restaurants that are embracing the trend of catering to luxury handbags include:

Marea, The Polo Bar and Le Bernardin in New York City, USA has introduced the miniature stools or hooks specifically designed to cradle handbags so that patrons can dine in style without sacrificing the safety and elegance of their cherished accessories.

Coya, Various Locations in cities like London, Monte Carlo and Dubai caters to its fashion-forward clientele by providing designated spaces for handbags. Whether it's a sleek hook or chic stool designed specifically for handbags, Coya ensures that guests can dine in style with peace of mind.

Armani in Milan, Nobu (globally), Sketch and the IVY in London are some other upscale restaurants that have incorporated hooks beneath tables and shelves or cubbies for luxury handbags allowing diners to keep their pricey possessions within arm’s length. These thoughtful touches not only elevate the dining experience but also serve as a subtle nod to the importance of fashion in modern industry.

The phenomenon of restaurants adding tiny seats or stools for luxury handbags is more than just a passing trend; it's a reflection of cultural values, industry trends, and the evolving nature of hospitality. By embracing this trend, restaurants are not only catering to the practical needs of their patrons but also paying homage to the timeless allure of luxury fashion. So the next time you dine out, don't be surprised if your handbag gets its own seat—it's all part of the experience.
